Witness (目撃者, Mokugeki-sha) is the 33rd chapter of the Parasyte manga series, written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki.

Overview[]

Kuramori begins digging deeper into Shinichi's past, linking him to several school incidents and the disappearance of his mother. Unable to grieve, Shinichi returns to the place Kana was killed. After Migi's failed attempt to eliminate him, Kuramori escapes knowing Shinichi's secret.

Summary[]

Kuramori muses on the strangeness he's found by investigating Shinichi.

On the way home, Shinichi goofs along with his friends including Kamijo, while Satomi walks with her friends who discuss him knowing Kana and Shinichi's quick emotional recovery despite her death being only a few days ago. Shinichi is pushed to go chat with Satomi, while her friends walk off looking unnerved by him. Satomi wonders how he can be so calm and strong, even uncharactistically so. She wonders if there was anything between him and Kana, then thinks that either way he's still too distant, and walks off on her own.

Kuramori recollects about the incidents he's learned, one of a Killer A in fall of Shinichi's first high school year and the other of Hideo Shimada in the summer of his second year.

At night, Shinichi thinks on Satomi's recent distance, wondering if she's upset about Kana. He then realizes that him being upset is weirder. Migi then warns him that if he continues talking to himself and Migi then his father will eventually notice.

Kuramori's internal monologue continues, now onto Nobuko's mysterious disappearance when she had returned from vacation and visited the Izumi household for a few minutes, then left, disappearing for good.

On Shinichi's way out during the evening, Kazuyuki tells him to not stay out too late. Kuramori follows him onto the train to Kana's hometown and ponders on the scene of Kana's death as well as the official silence on the dead killer's identity. Shinichi goes to the place where Kana had died, feeling that he's forgetting how to feel pain or grief, stating that he didn't always feel this way. Migi comments that it sounds like a waste of time, something Shinichi denies. Kuramori overhears him talking, apparently to himself.

Shinichi again blames himself for Kana mistaking the monster for him, and doesn't want to forget his grief. Migi transforms, considering his words, and shocking Kuramori. He takes out a camera to snap a photo and Migi attacks him. Shocked, Shinichi asks what Migi is doing, who replies that he's killing him. Shinichi then holds Migi back before the next attack connects and tells Kuramori to run. As he flees, Migi drags Shinichi out and lands a cut on Kuramori's leg, then disconnects in an attempt to go faster. However, due to his lack of leverage he only manages to land a deep cut on Kuramori's arm, who then flees. Migi returns to Shinichi and berates him for being seen, demanding they kill the witness.
