Resolve (覚悟, Kakugo) is the 60th chapter of the Parasyte manga series, written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki.
Overview[]
Just before Shinichi decides to leave and return home, a man is murdered and Shinichi becomes a suspect. After learning that the murder was done by some sort of creature, the villagers are told to stay indoors. Shinichi decides to face Gotou, due to the fact that he was originally after him, and that he doesn't want to cause anymore death.
Summary[]
Kitayama is attacked and eaten by an unknown monster, and Nakano runs frantically out of the woods in terror.
Mitsuyo wishes Shinichi a farewell, but before he can go Taoka pulls up and tells them he can't leave due to the mysterious body-less car crash and the murder of one of the villagers. He brings Shinichi and Mitsuyo to the village meeting where the others are currently trying to get Nakano to say more about the murder he witnessed. When asked if Shinichi is the murderer, Nakano simply cries out that the killer had been a three-meter tall monster with extra legs and eyes. The others scoff in disbelief, but Shinichi realizes that it must be Gotou.
He asks the man who brought him here where the car crash had been, and upon hearing that it had only been a few kilometers away thinks that he must have just been going in circles in the woods when escaping, and that Gotou couldn't have been far from them. He also concludes that it's his fault Gotou targeted the village.
The cops arrive, taking Nakano's statement and asking for any suspects. They decide to head as a group back to the scene of the crime for any clues. Soon, they come across the mutilated body, and decide it must be one of the Mincemeat Murders. They make plans to call in hunters, treating it as a hunt for a wild animal.
Back at Mitsuyo's home, she relays the news to Shinichi, who starts talking about Gotou, his invulnerability against guns, and how it's Shinichi's fault people are dying. He said he promised to survive for the sake of his friend who sacrificed himself for him, but also that he can't do so while others are still dying. Instead, Mitsuyo tells him that there's nothing to be ashamed of in running for his life, and tells him that he's being stupid for deciding to give up his own life when he can't possibly do anything either.
Shinichi reveals his inhuman capabilities by opening the door and catching several mosquitoes with one hand as they enter. Mitsuyo admits that he may have "superpowers", but he still shouldn't go anywhere near the monster.
At night, Shinichi begins to sneak out, only to be stopped by Mitsuyo. She asks if there won't be anyone he'll miss, and admits that it's human nature to care about people, even if they just met. She then gives him some advice to keep thinking, don't rush in, and don't give up. He thanks her and, after she asks if he needs a weapon, picks up a rusted cleaver.
As he finally departs, Mitsuyo asks for her dead husband to look after him.
Shinichi prays that Gotou will be recognizable as a monster. Gotou lurks in the dark as the chapter concludes.
