"You" (きみ, Kimi) is the 64th and final chapter of the Parasyte manga series, written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki.
Overview[]
Shinichi and Murano encounter Uragami on the street, in which the latter is kidnapped by the serial killer. On the roof of a building Shinichi and Uragami discuss what makes a human, a human, and why people reject the urge to kill. As Uragami begins to throw Murano off the building, Shinichi runs towards him and hits Uragami in the jaw, but is unable to catch Murano in time. As he cries, Migi quickly visits Shinichi in his psyche, revealing he saved Murano, and tells him to pull her up. Shinichi thanks Migi and lays on the ground, holding Murano, and looks at the sky smiling.
Summary[]
Uragami notes that despite his ability to sense parasites from humans, he almost never sees them around recently, up until he sees Shinichi again with Murano. Knowing that he's not fully human, Uragami decides he wants to meet him again.
As Shinichi and Murano walk through the crowds, they remark on how long they've been together. Shinichi briefly spots Uragami from behind but ignores it, thinking a serial killer like him wouldn't be walking free. As the two turn a corner to an empty street, Shinichi again sees Uragami in front of them, slipping through an alleyway. Concerned, Shinichi asks Murano to wait while he goes after Uragami, before immediately getting lost in the alleyways.
Meanwhile, Uragami comes up from behind Murano and kidnaps her. Her screams alert Shinichi and he runs back to the street, in time to see her and Uragami inside an elevator in a nearby building. As the doors close before he can enter, Shinichi runs up the stairs, all the way to the top.
On the rooftop, a man and a woman are conversing while Uragami appears, holding Murano with a knife to her neck. The two notice him and come close, so he slashes both of their necks, nearly decapitating them. He assures Murano that he is saving her for last, since he wants to talk to Shinichi first.
Shinichi finally arrives and sees Uragami holding Murano close to the edge. After calling for Murano, he asks Uragami what he wants from him. Uragami asks him a question about why people like himself kill while parasites kill for food, reasoning that it is human nature to murder. He continues by declaring that humans are the real parasites, knowing that without murder, the human population will grow at an unsustainable rate for the world. He finishes by stating that Shinichi understands him as he is not all human, revealing in front of Murano that he has a parasite mixed in him. Shinichi tries to refute him, but Uragami further reveals that he has a hole in his chest that he speculates the parasite entered through. Shinichi grabs his chest, but calms down. Uragami repeats his question, now asking if he looks human to him. Shinichi refuses to answer, instead stating that compared to Gotou, Uragami is like papier-mache. He then firmly demands that he let Murano go. Uragami pauses, and Shinichi starts to yell that he's correct about him before Murano interrupts.
Murano calmly asks that Shinichi call the police, declaring that Uragami is more of a monster than the parasites. She defends Shinichi and asserts that he is really human as he knows how valuable life is, recalling how he rescued her from a violent parasite in their high school a year ago. While impressed by her new courage, Uragami tempts Shinichi to call the police as well, knowing that he will be left alone with her. As Uragami moves closer to slitting her throat, Murano expresses remorse for her and Shinichi drifting away over the years.
Shinichi yells no and sprints toward them. Uragami quickly shoves Murano back over the edge while impaling his knife in Shinichi's left arm. Shinichi smashes him in the jaw in response, knocking him unconscious, but fails to catch Murano from falling off the roof in time. Shinichi screams in horror and collapses, sobbing.
In his psyche, Shinichi and Murano are on a road in the park, where they meet a stray puppy. As the two cuddle it, he remembers that the puppy died not long after he met it in real life a year ago, and that he doesn't understand why he felt so sad about it. Suddenly, Migi appears, answering that this is because humans are bored enough to think about other animals, but that is also mankind's greatest strength. Migi orders him to stop snivelling and help Murano up.
Shinichi wakes up to see his right hand holding Murano. He quickly pulls her up, happily thanking Migi for saving her in time. As they both lie on the roof, Shinichi finally tells Murano that after he dumped the dead puppy in the garbage bin, he took it out and gave it a proper burial under a tree. She assures him that she knows, because he is Shinichi. Onlookers soon arrive on the rooftop and call for help.
In a final view over Earth, an unknown voice concludes, "Hold close to something... until the day you die."
