More Than Human (人間以上, Ningen Ijō) is the 18th episode of the Parasyte -the maxim- (寄生獣 セイの格率,, Kiseijū Sei no Kakuritsu) anime series.
Overview[]
Because of her decision not to fight back, which allows the police to kill her, Reiko manages to give her baby to Shinichi before she dies. This causes Shinichi to have flashbacks of his own mother and of everything he's been through. Murano, looking on, saw him and asked "If he was back". As he cries, Shinichi replies, "My tears are". Detective Hirama takes Shinichi in for interrogation and a screening experiment. Uragami, the man doing the screening, is able to distinguish parasites from humans and can sense something in Shinichi.
Summary[]
Tamura reveals Parasites can indeed survive without cannibalizing humans, theorizing that both species belong to the same "family". The detectives arrive on scene and open fire on Tamura, who does not retaliate, but chooses to protect her baby. She slowly staggers toward Shinichi, pleading him in earnest to listen to what she has to say.
As he begins to back away, Tamura changes into Nobuko's face, making him stop. She detectives stop firing when she gets too close to him. She leaves her son in Shinichi's care, wanting him to lead a normal human life. After she notes the pleasant sensation of imitating human laughter in the past, she dies. The pain and loss Shinichi had experienced catches up to him as he realizes Tamura's sacrifice for her child, and he finally is able to cry.
Murano hears the now crying baby and follows the sound to the scene, welcoming Shinichi back. Shinichi is taken to a testing facility where Uragami is forced to identify whether a number of individuals have the Parasite-sensing ability or are a Parasite themselves.
The episode ends with Uragami detecting something in Shinichi, and the police telling the latter to make eye contact.
