Crime and Punishment (罪と罰, Tsumi to Batsu) is the 20th episode of the Parasyte -the maxim- (寄生獣 セイの格率,, Kiseijū Sei no Kakuritsu) anime series.

Overview[]

The military begins their operation to kill the parasites. During the assault, parasites and humans alike are killed. Gotou begins his own assault on the soldiers, as Shinichi watches on from a camera. Later on, Mayor Hirokawa is seen in a meeting room and asks the soldiers to take a seat.

Summary[]

The military catches and detects a Parasite via a X-ray. The Parasyte is then stopped and shot by one of the military men with a shotgun. The Parasyte attacks the shooter, but only hits the gun and slowly dies due to loss of blood (and being shot in the heart). They then take the body and move for an alternate route for the people to walk through and make them not suspect of anything. After two rounds of people evacuating, the military suspect the Parasites of using telepathy and that they are catching on to them.

We then see Takeshi Hirokawa communicating with the military men to say there are civilians on the second floor and that civilians will be frightened to see men with guns saying it will cause panic. Yamagishi orders them to stall Hirokawa and the Parasites from going to the second floor, and to bring Uragami inside to identify them. Uragami pleads to Kastumata to take his handcuffs off, and after a short scene with Shinichi asking Migi if they should help out. The military men point their gun towards the crowd and Hirokawa becomes angry saying "How dare you point guns at civilians?". Shortly after, one of the Parasites ask one of the military men to be evacuated, with the military man proceeding. They try to go beside each other without getting caught as a tactic, the military men tell them to not break formation and to walk in a single file line.

Uragami comes in and says there are 3 Parasites. One tries to run away and gets shot, but turns out it was a human. A Parasite gets caught and is told to get in line but he quickly attacks, slicing one of the men's head off. Then we see the Parasite get shot twice, as well as the Parasite who asked the men to evacuate her. She gets shot inside the building, and then hell breaks loose, as the Parasites start attacking and humans start screaming. Hirokawa then heads up to the second floor with his Parasite comrades with the military men doing nothing. Yamagishi, Katsumata, Uragami and other military men head inside. Yamagishi tells people to get on the floor and put their hands behind their head, with him saying if they stand he "Will shoot to kill!" A human then stands up, getting shot right after.

Yamagishi orders Kisagari squad to stay there and make sure no one is being suspicious, and if they are,"Shoot at once" The survivors of the Mutsuki and Satsuki squad then join his, and are set to clean up the rest of the building. Uragami and Katsumata go with, though Uragami is coming to ID if one's a Parasite. Yamagishi's group heads up stairs and already a Parasite grabs a human downstars and starts running with Kisagari's squad being ruthless and shooting the human, hitting the Parasites face, thus killing him. A scene later and we see Gotou and Hirokawa conversating. Gotou questions Hirokawa for not trying to escape, Hirokawa asking the same for him. Gotou responds saying he wanted to watch a little longer and see how the enemies fight. Hirokawa felt it was pointless running at this point, and so decided staying on the second floor. Gotou decides he'll just do "What I want".

We then see Yamagishi discover the news that Uzuki squad encountered Hirokawa's group en route to the city council wing, then lost contact with them in the second floor hallway. Yamagishi orders Shingetsu squad (his group) to take the main wing and Mutsuki and Satsuki squads to head to the council wing, with Uragami accompanying them. We then see Mutsuki and Satsuki's squad discover Uzuki squad dead on the floor losing to Hirokawa's group. Yamagishi and his group then encounter a Parasite trying to plead for help and Yamagishi immediately shooting it. Uragami easily spots a Parasite, with the military men chasing and shooting him dead. Gotou then appears and discovers the tactic they are using, which is large shotgun rounds to destroy the body.

Uragami immediately knows Gotou is a Parasite and screams in absolute fear, running away with Katsumata chasing him. Uragami tells Katsumata about Gotou, saying he didn't look human at all. Gotou and 5 military men walk into a room where Gotou gives them 2 minutes to fire at him. He then takes every single bullet, and shoots them back at them from his body, killing all 5 of them. Katsumata puts a gun at Uragami's head forcing them to go back with their group. Gotou walks out of the room unscathed.

At the end of the episode, Shingetsu squad goes into the meeting room and meets Hirokawa, patiently waiting for them.
