Life and Oath (生命と誓い, Seimei to Chikai) is the 23rd and penultimate episode of the Parasyte -the maxim- (寄生獣 セイの格率, Kiseijuu Sei no Kakuritsu) anime series.

Overview

While searching for Gotou, Shinichi accepts that he may die in this confrontation. After multiple failed attempts to kill Gotou, Shinichi is able to wound him using a rusty pipe. Before Gotou lands a lethal strike on Shinichi, Migi is revealed to have been alive inside Gotou and relocates to Shinichi's body, stopping the blow and saving his life. The parasites within Gotou's body rebel against him and he bursts apart due to Shinichi poisoning him earlier. As Shinichi watches Gotou struggle to stay alive, and Migi refuses to kill him as it would be like murder, they decide to let Gotou live. Migi and Shinichi contemplate that parasites purging the Earth of humans may be good due to the negative impact humans have on the environment. Shinichi also considers how giving mercy to others is a redeemable human trait. However, he eventually decides to protect his family and friends over the supposed good of many and finally destroys Gotou's body.
