Synopsis[]

After revealing everything he knows to Chul-min, Kang-woo agrees to help save Su-in. But when the plan goes awry, lives are put at risk.

Plot[]

At a debrief with several important leaders via Zoom, it is mentioned by one of the members of Team Grey that the parasites have been using Saejin Church as their base this whole time. This team member explains how they raided the location based on a tip-off, but by the time they arrived there, the parasites had fled the nearby area. But they have reason to believe that those leaders may still be in Namil-gun. When the Grey team member refers to Su-in as a 29 year old clerk at a supermarket near Namil-gun, Choi Joon-Kyung is quick to correct that statement. She believes that Su-in is no longer human, especially after seeing her with her own eyes. However, Kim Chul-min, Captain of Violent Crimes Team 3 of Namil Police explains that Su-in is still a normal human being. He doesn’t think she is a monster, as he conducted tests on Su-in and it showed she was still human. He demands that Choi Joon-kyung and the rest of Team Grey report the tests they must have run on Su-in. Cornered, the Grey team member explains that they took X-rays and conducted a hair test on Su-in, and based on the results she does not in fact exhibit any of the characteristics seen in parasites. An angry Choi Joon-kyung reiterates that she saw her, and suggests that perhaps Su-in is a mutated version of a parasite. She states that they don’t know everything there is to know about parasites, and that their current methods of distinguishing them from humans is not fool-proof. Kim Chul-min finds this ridiculous and says that if all signs point to Su-in being human, then what Choi Joon-kyung is doing to her with the contraption on her head is inhumane. One of the leaders on the Zoom call says that it is time to inform the public about parasites. Which may help with misinformation and alleviate some of the chaos and uncertainty being felt. However, in order to do this sufficiently Team Grey needs to have a clear understanding of the parasite, as well as the ability to contain them.

Meanwhile, Su-in finds herself in a dream-like state where she comes face to face with a mental manifestation of Heidi. The parasite explains how if she had not intervened, Su-in would be in a very difficult situation. One full of excruciating pain that would result in death not long after. Thus, Heidi cut off Su-in from the outside world for the time being, which has resulted in being unconscious to Team Grey. Since this may be their first and only chance to speak face-to-face, Heidi tells Su-in that she brought her to her innermost thoughts,so that Su-in finally learns the truth about herself. Heidi explains that in the end, the two of them are forever entwined if they want to survive, and have no choice but to co-exist. Thus she has no reason to hurt Su-in, so she doesn’t need to be afraid. Later, Heidi shows Su-in the memory of when she reported her dad, and that despite being the victim suffering her father’s wrath, the crowd gathered outside only saw her as a monster. As they couldn’t believe a small child had reported her own father.

Kim Chul-min is informed that they identified the man Su-in was with as Seol Kang-woo, a man with two priors for violent crimes. According to the Guro police department, he is regarded as a henchman for the Mangnani, a gang active in the Guro area. Moreover, Chul-min is informed that they also identified a few gang members from Guro among the bodies found at Saejin Church. Furthermore, according to the detective in Guro, there was a power struggle between the Mangnani in Guro and the Cheoli in Yeongdeungpo. As it turns out, the Mangnani tried in vain to kill the Cheoli underboss. Coincidentally, he was made a scapegoat in order to broker peace between the two gangs. Before he goes to search for Kang-woo, he mentions to the policemen relaying this information to not mention it to Team Grey.

Elsewhere, Kang-woo is at a bus station, and as he is waiting for his bus, he reads on his phone that it is being reported that the Saejin church murder is being declared as a hit-and-run case. On seeing the lack of news reports on parasites, he remarks that this is why he doesn’t trust the news nor pay close attention to them. Eventually, he boards his bus, puts his hood up and closes his eyes. But surprisingly, Kim Chul-min sits next to him on the bus, who asks Kang-woo if he doesn’t think the moves he was making were obvious; almost like he was trying hard to make a run for it. The young man tries to make a run for it, but the older detective keeps him in place. He handcuffs Kang-woo, and advises him to not make a scene.

Once he is inside Chul-min’s car, Kang-woo relents and says he will go with him, but not to the police station that he works at. He wants to go to another because there is a monster at Chul-min’s station who is disguising himself as a cop. Kang-woo explains that the parasite Team Grey kept as a hunting dog of sorts was killed by one of the cops he works with. But Chul-min doesn’t believe him, saying that they have already undergone tests to see if anyone within the police force is a parasite. Eventually, Chul-min pulls up a group picture he has of himself and the other cops at his police station to see if Kang-woo can identify the wolf in sheep’s clothing hiding amongst them. Kang-woo is quick to ID Kang Won-seok as the one he saw killing the parasite. Chul-min is shocked to hear this, and he then asks Kang-woo to tell him everything that happened between himself and Su-in.

Meanwhile, Kang Won-seok informs Kwon Hyuk-joo, the leader of the parasites that Su-in is to be transferred in two hours time via Route 39. Kang Won-seok asks the pastor if they are still moving forward with their plan, to which Hyuk-joo says that they are and that it starts today.

Su-in and Heidi continue looking through Su-in’s memories, and she tells the parasite how she had begged Chul-min to give her the whereabouts of her mom. After turning her dad in for the abuse he subjected her to, she couldn’t help but wonder if her mom missed her. However, her mom only showed love to the other child she gave birth to while living with another man. Instead of love, her mother saw her as some sort of pest she was trying to get rid of. She realized at that moment that she couldn’t be loved by anyone. Heidi then goes on to say that humans do not not judge any object as an independent entity. From her perspective, Su-in’s mother is judging her in relation to the environment in which her husband abused her. So rather than disliking her as an individual entity, her experience in that abusive environment, which Su-in was also a victim in, makes her believe that she dislikes Su-in too. Heidi conforts Su-in by telling her how it is not that young woman was cursed in particular, Afterwards, Heidi states that she didn’t choose to be born, and that if she and Su-in had not integrated like they did the two of them would have died. But all that Su-in can tell Heidi is that she should have let her die.

Elsewhere, Chul-min recaps what Kang-woo told him; starting with the fact that Su-in is in fact a parasite. But unlike the other parasites, Su-in’s humanity remains intact. Kang-woo clarifies that it is not that Su-in’s humanity remains, but rather that Jeong Su-in is still in there. That she is the main being, but sometimes the parasite known as Heidi sometimes takes over. However, it’s only to protect Su-in because the two need each other to survive. Chul-min informs Kang-woo that Su-in is going to be transferred to headquarters today, but he knows that she will die if she makes it over there. So he asks Kang-woo to help him get her out before she gets transferred. After some back and forth, Kang-woo ultimately decides to help out Chul-min.

At the Namil police station, Kang-woo manages to get in, and successfully poses as a grey team member. Just as he was about to get the control to release Su-in, Choi Joon-Kyung arrives earlier than expected and takes the control with her. On the way to being transported, they are ambushed by some parasites. Choi Joon-Kyung is knocked out, but just when Kang-woo gets the control to release Su-in and Heidi, Joon-Kyung gets up and the two begin to fight. Chaos ensues as the rest of the police force evacuate the civilians on the bridge. Kang-woo begins to break Su-in free but the side of the trailer they were in is ripped apart by a parasite that begins to attack Kang-woo. However, Kim Chul-min lands a critical shot onto the parasite and saves Kang-woo in the nick of time.

Meanwhile, Heidi continues talking with Su-in by telling the human that even when she considered herself a monster, there have always been people in her life that are looking out for her and care about her. By pure luck, Kang-woo presses the right button on the helmet contraption keeping Su-in prisoner, and Heidi tells Su-in they need to go back. Eventually, Su-in opens her eyes, and the first thing she sees is Kang-woo who is there to rescue her. With Joon-Kyung being held up fighting with other parasites, she is unable to pursue Su-in, even when she sees her getting in a red car. Now on the road, Kang-woo explains to Su-in that Kang Won-seok is a monster after he saw him killing the parasite that once was Joo-Kyung’s husband. Midway through the chase, Kang Won-seok seemingly gives up and makes a turn, which Chul-min questions. Su-in gets a ringing noise in her ear, which alerts her to a parasite being nearby and thus Chul-min being in danger. So she forces Kang-woo to stop the car in order to help Chul-min.

Kang Won-seok goes on to tell Chul-min that despite the hard work they do as cops, they don’t see anything in return. Their salaries barely go up, and they can barely afford the tuition for their children and other living expenses. Thus, he comes clean to his superior about working with the parasites, in order to be on the winning side for once. So Won-Seok asks his captain to trust him and work with him and the parasites. Unfortunately, Su-in is too late, and Chul-min gets decapitated, with the parasite formerly inhabiting Kwon Hyuk-joo taking over his body. The two parasites duke it out but are saved in the nick of time by Kang-woo. Won-Seok asks the parasite inhabiting Chul-min’s body now if they are going after them, but he says they aren’t. That he now needs to get used to his new body.

Meanwhile, back at the bridge, Team Grey assesses the damage and casualties caused by the parasite attack.
