The Royal Prince (王子) is a short story in the manga anthology Neo Parasyte F, written and illustrated by Miki Rinno. It is Case 3 in the volume.

Synopsis[]

A teenage girl named Yuki Yamazaki finds herself in Sakurazaki Hospital. With the help of a parasite she calls her prince, she escapes and returns to ordinary life. However, a mysterious and dangerous stalker lurks behind the scenes.

Summary[]

A young girl's phone receives a notification as she is restrained onto a hospital bed and is injected with midazolam by a nurse. That night, a parasite that had landed nearby crawls into her room and enters her ear to take over her brain; however, the parasite is distracted by a "darkness around the brain" and only barely manages to take over her brain due to it. The parasite frees itself from its restraints and rises, accidentally waking up its host's consciousness in the process and creates a second mouth to audibly state that it had failed to completely take over. The young girl takes control of her body for a moment to panic and question her confinement before once again being overtaken by the parasite who jumps out the high window and safely lands. While falling, the young girl notes that the situation reminds her of a prince saving a princess from confinement and begins to call the parasite her "Prince". The hospital workers react to the commotion and the Prince notes that they need to leave the area before they are caught again. The young girl says that they should return to her home. Prince morphs part of the girl's face to find their bearings as the young girl asks for what has happened to her. Prince explains that it has taken over her brain but she lightheartedly brushes off the concept.

While walking home and chatting with Prince, the young girl bumps into a boy coming up to check on her since he had heard that she had been taken to the hospital that morning. The boy calls her Yamazaki and she acknowledges him as her senpai. Seeing that she is safe, her senpai tells her to let him know if she needs anything and returns home. Yamazaki turns the corner and jumps in glee as Prince tells her to go home. She returns home to find that the lights are turned off and hurriedly begins to sneak to her room in an attempt to not wake anyone up. Prince notes that someone has prepared dinner before morphing away as a singular eye to inspect the kitchen: Yamazaki tells Prince not to transform in public. Prince sees that the "prepared meal" is her father, mother and sister's corpses mangled and laying silently. Yamazaki tells Prince to return.

In Yamazaki's room, Prince remarks that her collection of Shoujo manga is very well maintained. Yamazaki begins to snack as Prince takes a manga and begins to read. When questioned why it is so interested, Prince states that it simply their natural instinct to want to collect knowledge. Yamazaki ponders why she was in the hospital and Prince tells her to rest so that he can have better control of her body. Prince wonders why human females are so emotionally driven and is baffled by their being stark opposites: the parasite notes that Yamazaki is extremely emotional and wants to learn more about why; however, Prince is unable to find anything that could assist in answering his inquiries and continues to read manga instead. As Yamazaki sleeps, Prince reads the totality of her collection. While Prince begins to understand the appeal of romance, it fails to understand the onomatopoeia of "throb" and the emotions associated with it.

Yamazaki awakes to Prince calling her "honey." She is surprised but appreciates the comment, telling Prince to instead call her "princess" because it is a prince. Prince reluctantly agrees as Yamazaki rushes to get dressed. Yamazaki is taken aback by the number of notifications on her phone. When she is questioned by whom, she tells Prince she has a stalker. She reveals to it her stalker has been sending her poems but recently have become a lot more violent in their messages, claiming they would even harm her family. Yamazaki falls down the stairs but Prince takes over and catches her fall, telling her it will protect and loves her afterwards in an attempt to get her emotions riled up. She is shock by its choice in words and asks if Prince learned all of it from her manga. Prince says he did and tells her that he chose those words specifically to get a reaction out of her. She tells Prince she is mad at him because she had specifically told him to stay out of the "teen love" section. As she leaves her home, her senpai is seen behind her.

While they walk to school, the parasite explains to her its origins. It explains that even though it did not completely take over her mind, it is completely satisfactory with coexisting with Yamazaki. Rather then addressing the situation, Yamazaki asks for Prince to rephrase in a more "cool" way and it does so. Yamazaki reveals she is actually ecstatic to have Prince as a part of her and appreciates being called its host. Prince sees someone across the street and retracts to Yamazaki's face. That person is revealed to be Yamazaki's friend, Riko, and she calls to her and they greet one another. At the same time, Yamazaki's senpai makes his presence known and Yamazaki blushes in embarrassment.

At school, Yamazaki shows Prince some of the messages that her stalker has been sending her. She makes fun of the stalker and calls him a chicken for not making a physical appearance. Prince says that the stalker likely has and likely attends the school as well: it tells her it sensed some same brain waves outside of her house and also senses them at school. Yamazaki is baffled but Prince assures her that it will protect her. Yamazaki is flustered but Prince does not understand why since protecting its host makes complete logical sense. Yamazaki takes out a pastry and notes that despite it being her favorite, it seems to less "angelic" than usual before trying to feed it to Prince who spits it out like a child. Yamazaki teases Prince.

During class, Yamazaki falls asleep: ignoring their surroundings, Prince takes over her body and leaves for the library where it begins to read about the human brain. Suddenly, her senpai bursts into the library and notes it as strange for her to be there. A sleeping Yamazaki mutters that "someone has appeared to protect her" to her senpai's confusion. Yamazaki's senpai approaches her and touches her, causing her to wake up. At the same time, Prince prevents its natural urge to eat their senpai. It notices that someone has opened the door: it is Riko who tells Yamazaki that their teacher is looking for her. Yamazaki begins returning to class. Prince asks itself why it was unable to act on its natural instincts. Prince feels the intent to kill from the library and tells Yamazaki it is her stalker. We are shown that something has cut and killed Yamazaki's teacher into three parts, similar to her family. Yamazaki begins to rush towards the library and asks Prince to defeat her stalker. Prince tells her it cannot do that.

Yamazaki reaches the library and opens the door to find both Riko and her senpai unharmed; however, her senpai's arm is raised and in it is a pair of scissors aimed at Riko. Yamazaki questions what is happening and tries to run between Riko and her senpai. While running, Prince transforms into a griffon claw and attacks Riko. Believing Prince has misunderstood the situation, Yamazaki asks why. Yamazaki realizes she has revealed her secret to her senpai and is momentarily stunned. Prince tells Yamazaki not to let her guard down and reveals that Riko is also a parasite; however, Prince is too late and Riko eats their senpai's head off. Understanding that they have no other option, Prince kills Riko.

After looking through Riko's phone together, Prince exposits that Riko has been the stalker the whole time. Riko's phone was completely filled with information about Yamazaki -including her date of birth, address, family details, and more- and it contained a log of every message Yamazaki's stalker had sent her. Prince figures that after assimilating the original Riko, the parasite must have had nothing else to read except Riko's insane fantasies and decided to act them out. Yamazaki begins to cry, saying that their deaths and all the deaths to have come before were her fault. In the past, Riko had confessed her feelings to Yamazaki but she never believed them to be serious. She asks Prince for what to do. Prince tells her it was not her fault. It tries to convey that it was her senpai's powerlessness led to his death and, given the circumstances, it had no choice but to kill Riko. It is unable to sway her feelings and tries to think of the best possible answer. Prince tells her it loves her again but it no longer holds the same effect it had earlier.

Prince feels the "darkness" that had distracted it before returning. Yamazaki begins to relapse in insanity. She asks for Prince to save her and gets up. Prince physically stops her from moving and tells her it is dangerous to move while in this state and if it continues, she will revert to how she acted before it took over part of her brain. Prince tells her she cannot return home either because if she does, she will completely go insane. Hearing Prince say home, causes her to remember everything that she had blocked out yesterday.

Yesterday morning, Yamazaki woke up to find her family in the mangled state that Prince would later find them in. Unable to handle the sudden shock, Yamazaki leaves her home and begins to freak out in a panic. Someone nearby calls the ambulance and after taken home and restrained, she would be put in the state where the story began.

Prince tells Yamazaki that it will be alright. It tells her that if she feels sadness or distress, it will protect her from all those too. Prince tells Yamazaki because of how it combined with her brain, it can completely control her emotions. Prince states that while they will not become one, they will exist more closely together. It will be a natural form. She would never suffer anymore. Yamazaki accepts Prince's offer.

The light from Yamazaki's eyes fade as Prince takes more control. They ask themselves if this was the feeling of "throb".
